We used to be huge fans of a Chinese takeaway before we started our slimming journey, which is why we’ve adapted lots of our favourite dishes into healthier, ‘fakeaway’ versions!

Our Salt and Pepper Chips taste exactly like the ones that you’d pick up from the takeaway – the only difference is that they’re much lower in calories and Points, so why not try them for your next big night in?

They’re super quick and easy to make and you can adjust the amount of chillies and chilli flakes depending on how hot you like it!

How do you know when these Salt and Pepper Chips are cooked?

You’ll need to cook these Salt and Pepper Chips for around 20 minutes or until they’re golden brown.

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes.  This is to keep your family safe.

For the Chips

  • 3 large potatoes
  • 1-2 spring onions finely diced
  • ½ green pepper chopped
  • ½ red pepper chopped
  • 1-2 whole chillies deseeded and sliced
  • 2 tsp salt and pepper spice mix see below for the recipe
  • low calorie cooking spray

For the Spice Mix

  • 1 tbsp sea salt flakes
  • 1 tbsp granulated sweetener
  • ½ tbsp Chinese 5 spice
  • 1 good pinch chilli flakes
  • 1 tsp ground white pepper

  1. Mix all of the spice mix ingredients together.
  1. Pre heat the oven to 200°C.
  2. Peel the potatoes and cut them into chunky chips.
  3. Place them in a pan of boiling salted water and simmer until they start to soften but are still quite firm.
  4. Drain the potatoes and spray a baking tray with low calorie cooking spray.
  5. Coat the potatoes in low calorie cooking spray and sprinkle them with a little salt and pepper mix.
  6. Place in the oven for 15-20 minutes until they are soft and starting to colour.
  7. Spray a frying pan with a generous amount of low calorie cooking spray, then add the chopped spring onions, peppers and chillies and cook for a few minutes until they start to soften.
  8. Add the potatoes to the pan and sprinkle with the salt and pepper spice mix (you can use as much or as little as you like). Keep stirring and tossing the ingredients so they do not catch and burn. You may need to add a bit more Low calorie cooking spray to the pan.
  9. Continue cooking until the chips are golden brown, then serve.
  1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into chunky chips, pat them dry with some kitchen roll.
  2. Place the chips in a bowl, and spray them with a decent amount of Low calorie cooking spray.
  3. Sprinkle with the Salt and Pepper Spice Mix (you can use as much or as little as you like).
  4. Place them in the air fryer and cook for 20 minutes. Then add the chopped peppers, chillies and continue to cook for another 10 minutes.
  5. Add the chopped spring onion and cook for 5 minutes.
  6. Check that the chips are cooked and golden brown, and the chilli, peppers and spring onions are cooked (if not cook for a few more minutes) then serve.

Tip: you can vary the amount of fresh chillies and chilli powder to your preferred level of spice!
